Tee Higgins’ Massive Contract Projection Could Spell Trouble for Bengals’ Future

Tee Higgins’ Massive Contract Projection Could Spell Trouble for Bengals’ Future…

After playing out the 2024 season on the franchise tag, Cincinnati Bengals star wide receiver Tee Higgins is a pending free agent and the expectation is he’s going to cash in with a hefty contract.

That’s because Higgins is the best wide receiver set to hit the open market, assuming he actually does. There remains an outside chance the Bengals slap the tag on him again with the intent to trade him, but we wouldn’t bet on that.

The only concern about Higgins is his injury history. The former second-round pick has missed 10 games combined the past two seasons, so that could give teams pause about giving him a monster deal.

Despite that concern, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler revealed that team personnel he spoke to around the league believe Higgins is going to land a deal that pays him north of $30 million per season.

“The over/under on Bengals receiver Tee Higgins’ market is $30 million per season, and the majority of team personnel that I spoke with believe he’ll hit or clear the over,” Fowler wrote.

“The lowest estimate I heard was somewhere slightly above DeVonta Smith’s three-year, $75 million deal. The rest saw him breaking into the $30 million range, based on his status as a No. 1-caliber receiver and the number of teams desperate for pass-catching help.”

A deal worth $30 million annually would rank in the top five among receivers. It is wild to think Higgins could rank that high, but with him being the prize of the wide receiver market, we could definitely see it happening.

The overwhelming thought has been that the Bengals won’t retain Higgins because of the massive extension they’re going to give Ja’Marr Chase. It just wouldn’t make sense for the Bengals to have so much money wrapped up in two wide receivers, especially when you consider the team’s desperate need to upgrade the defense.

If Higgins is commanding north of $30 million per year, that will spell the end of his tenure in Cincinnati, plain and simple. Higgins has expressed interest in staying with the Bengals, but he’s going to have to take less than that in order to do so.
