The Luka Doncic and Anthony Davis trade is still shocking to fans and players around the NBA but there were others players involved in that deal which have been hugely affected.
The Lakers acquired Doncic, one of the greatest young talents in the league today and one of the more exciting Europeans to ever enter the league, as well as Maxi Kleber and Markieff Morris, in exchange for Davis and Max Christie.
The trade had been hugely criticized by not only just Dallas Mavericks fans, losing their only ascending superstar in Doncic, but also by NBA fans in general.
Many had brandished it as one of the worst deals in NBA history on the side of the Mavericks, especially when considering Davis’ injury issues over the last few years – already going down after his first game and being ruled out for two weeks.
And while Christie has had to deal with the criticism of being part of the trade that many Mavericks fans did not want, he has also left the city he called home for the past three years. He had become a starting player with the Lakers this season while averaging 25 points a game as a reliable three-point shooter, but the wild trade would mean he’d be moving and having no say in the decision.
Christie told Andscape that the deal affected him as much as it had appeared to with Doncic and Davis. He said: “If you look at the magnitude of that trade, it magnifies that emotion. So, I was shocked, man. I was on the floor in the hotel room for two hours just thinking about what was going on. I eventually came to my senses, obviously, and had to put one foot in front of the other and think about what I needed to do next.
Since the trade, Christie has been pushed into a role as the starter for the Mavericks, who will now be reliant on him and Kyrie Irving in the backcourt.
Christie returned to Los Angeles to face the Lakers in an emotional game this week, where Doncic dropped a triple-double in the win over the Mavericks.
After the game, he admitted he is still processing the trade. He said: “The closure’s gonna take a while, I think. You know, it’s not ideal. But like I said, I’m glad this game is over. You know, there’s a lot of emotions. But we go little by little, and every day is better.
