Ja Morant Performs Grenade Celebration After Receiving $75,000 Fine

Ja Morant pulled off another controversial in-game celebration, opting for a grenade instead of his usual finger gun gesture. On Tuesday night, the Memphis Grizzlies paid a visit to the Charlotte Hornets. In the middle of the game, Morant appeared to have thrown a grenade at the opposing team’s bench after hitting a 3-pointer. Cameras caught Morant pretending to pull a pin with his teeth and throwing a grenade at the Hornets’ bench while covering his ears to mimic an explosion. Morant did the gesture several times throughout the game and proved he was going to war on the court by leading the Grizzles to a 124-100 victory with a stat line of 28 points, five rebounds, and eight assists. His latest celebratory move comes after the NBA fined him $75,000 for pulling out the finger guns in various games. He mimed guns to the Golden State Warriors, which caused league officials to give him a public warning. Morant ignored their comments and repeated the gesture in a game against the Miami Heat, leading to the hefty fine. Morant has stated he’s “well aware” of the controversy and criticism stemming from his gun celebration and claimed he’s “used to it” while adding he’s been a “villain for two years now.” The NBA gave Morant a pair of lengthy suspensions in 2023 for flashing a gun on Instagram Live two different times. In addition to the suspension, Morant admitted himself into a counseling program and formally apologized to his team and fans. “I know I’ve disappointed a lot of people who have supported me,” Morant said in a statement at the time. “This is a journey and I recognize there is more work to do. My words may not mean much right now, but I take full accountability for my actions. I’m committed to continuing to work on myself.”
