Former University of Kentucky basketball legend Jack “Goose” Givens visited Pikeville to promote his book “They Call Me Goose,” which follows his childhood growing up in Lexington to basketball at UK and then professionally.
He spoke with area residents and signed copies of his book at the Pike County Library on Lee Avenue Feb. 13.
“I have been so blessed to have lived this life doing what I love to do,” Givens said. “From my family to UK and playing in the pros and now meeting folks and being part of the broadcast crew calling UK games, yes God has definitely blessed me.”
Around 75 people listened as Givens talked about his life then answered audience questions before signing his book and other UK items for those in attendance.
Givens led UK basketball to the 1978 NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship and was named that year’s Final Four Most Outstanding Player after his 41-point performance in UK’s victory over Duke in the championship game.
“Being a player was tremendous,” Givens said. “But meeting people in this type of setting and helping broadcast UK games is really icing on the cake.
