Furious locals block road into beautiful European fairytale village to keep tourists out

The village has reportedly inspired the kingdom of Arendelle in the Disney blockbuster Frozen.

A picturesque village in Austria is embroiled in controversy after locals staged a protest against mass tourism. Hallstatt, a lakeside dreamy village located in Austria, has a population of just 800 people but gets up to 10,000 visitors a day during high season.

The village has reportedly inspired the kingdom of Arendelle in the Disney blockbuster Frozen. Fed up with the overwhelming tourism, the residents blocked the main access tunnel to the village last Sunday.

The tunnel was closed for about 15 minutes, the Austrian newspaper Salzburger Nachrichten reported.

The protesters wanted a cap on daily visitors and a 5pm curfew for tour buses.

Hallstatt is a charming village nestled in the Salzkammergut region of Austria, renowned for its breathtaking natural beauty, rich history, and cultural significance.

The village features a well-preserved historic centre with narrow cobblestone streets, colourful buildings adorned with flower boxes, and charming cafes and shops.
