With nine NBA All-Star selections under his belt, Kyrie Irving is still playing basketball at a high level. He apparently still wants to showcase his skills on the international stage, though it might not be for Team USA.

Shortly after last weekend’s All-Star Game in San Francisco, the Mavericks guard was asked if he would consider representing Australia at the 2028 Olympic Games. Based on his answer, Irving seems optimistic about suiting up for the Boomers in the future.

“We’re in the process of that right now, just trying to figure out what’s going to be the best route for me to be eligible,” Irving told reporters Sunday. “There’s a lot of paperwork in between that. Obviously Team USA still has a decision to make, but for me, I’m just trying to do what’s best for me.”

Although Irving previously represented the U.S. at the international level, he has a shot at playing for Australia since he was born in Melbourne. According to an article from usabasketball.com, Irving felt it was a “very difficult decision” to choose between the U.S. and Australia back in 2010. Irving and his family lived in Australia until he was nearly two years old while his father, Drederick, played professional basketball.

Irving ended up choosing Team USA, representing the country at competitions like the 2010 FIBA Americas U18 Championship and the 2014 FIBA World Cup. He also played for the U.S. at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. The guard won gold medals in each of those competitions.

Per ESPN, Irving would need approval from FIBA, USA Basketball and Basketball Australia to make the switch happen. The 2028 Olympics will take place in Los Angeles and are slated to begin in July 2028. Irving would be 36 at that point.

“Honestly, if I can be an Aussie at one point in my career and play for the Australian team, that would be great,” Irving said.
