U.S. OPEN APPROACHING: The U.S. Open Wrestling Championships are set for April 23-27 in Las Vegas but Penn State wrestlers have yet to announce their intentions of competing. The Senior Open is set for April 25-26. Winners compete in the Final X in June to determine Team USA for the World Championships in October in Croatia. Thus far, only 2025 Penn State recruit Marcus Blaze (61kg) is among the highly competitive field. In fact, FloWrestling picked Blaze to win over the likes of Nahshon Garrett and Daton Fix. Blaze could have competed in the U-20 division but chose the Senior level because of past success. Penn State recruits PJ Duke (70kg) and Will Henckel (79kg) are entered in the U-20 U.S. Open that features hundreds of high school and young college wrestlers. THOMAS GILMAN BACK AT PENN STATE: Former Olympic bronze medalist Thomas Gilman, who was competing for and training with the Nittany Lion Wrestling Club but left when David Taylor offered him a coaching role at Oklahoma State, is returning to the NLWC as a coach. Gilman said last week on the Baschamania podcast that the decision to leave State College for Stillwater was made quickly and said “that was probably the genesis of everything.” Gilman said there were issues but he was not going to point fingers, noting that “you can have a disagreement and move on.” Gilman also said on the podcast that he broached the subject of competing again with Penn State coaches Cael and Cody Sanderson and that they were supportive. “That door opened back up and I wasn’t sure it was ever going to. They opened that door back up and I’m not going to let them down again,” Gilman said about the Penn State and NLWC coaching staff.
