This day in sports history: Mets clinch NL East in 1986
The New York Mets celebrate in their clubhouse and on the field at Shea Stadium after defeating the Chicago Cubs to win the National League East title Sept. 17, 1986. The Mets went on to defeat the Houston Astros for the National League title and the Boston Red Sox for the World Series title.
