The injury report prior to Kentucky basketball’s match against No. 4 Alabama contains more unfavorable news.

The latest SEC injury report was posted Friday night, and UK guards Lamont Butler, Kerr Kriisa and Jaxson Robinson have all been ruled out of the game against the Crimson Tide.

Butler, the Wildcats’ starting point guard, will miss his third consecutive game with a shoulder injury that was originally suffered in a victory over Texas A&M on Jan. 14. He played two games with that injury including UK’s 102-97 loss to Alabama in Rupp Arena four days later before sitting out three games, then returning to the court.

The Cats beat South Carolina and Tennessee upon Butler’s return after losing four of five games immediately following his injury but he reinjured his shoulder while diving to the floor for a loose ball in the victory over the Volunteers, and this will be his third straight DNP since then.

UK coach Mark Pope said Friday that Butler would be doing “a little bit of live action” in practice later that day. He quickly corrected that and used the word “modified” to describe Butler’s expected participation in practice, a sign that he will continue to be eased back into contact drills.

Butler also missed two games in December after suffering a sprained ankle in a loss to Clemson. He had played in 104 consecutive college basketball games before that.

This will be the fourth straight game on the sidelines for Robinson, who suffered a wrist injury in practice on Feb. 7 and then tried to play through it the following day against South Carolina. He had just six points on 2-for-8 shooting in that game and hasn’t played since.

Pope said earlier this week that Robinson, who missed only one of a possible 68 games due to injury under the coach at BYU over the previous two seasons, hadn’t been able to do anything with his shooting wrist in practice since the South Carolina game. He was on the Rupp Arena court to help rebound in pregame and halftime shootaround Wednesday night, but he used only his left hand to retrieve basketballs and pass to teammates.

Pope said Robinson would be doing “some skill stuff” during Friday’s practice session, indicating that he will be back to using his shooting hand in some capacity.

Robinson has been the team’s de facto starting point guard in the absence of Butler and Kriisa, and he’s the second-leading scorer (13.3 points per game) this season.

Kriisa hasn’t played since Dec. 7, when he suffered a fractured foot in a victory over Gonzaga. UK announced less than 24 hours after that game that he would have to undergo surgery for the injury, which was not expected to be season-ending at the time.

This will be his 18th straight game on the sidelines. If Kriisa can’t return this season, he would be eligible for a medical redshirt. Pope called that a possibility this week but said getting back on the court this season remains the primary focus for his backup point guard. He reiterated that Friday, though the UK coach noted how difficult a return this season could be for Kriisa.

“With Kerr, it’s just a race to get healthy, if he can,” Pope said. “That’s kind of the deal. Can he get healthy? Can he get there? You know, we’re still farther away than we anticipated being, and so certainly the window is getting tight right now. Because, from where he is right now, the steps he would have to take from here to get back on the court to be cleared to play are a little bit extensive. But we’re kind of fighting every day the best we can to see if we can get him closer. And he is working to do that, too. So, if we can find a way for him to play, he’s going to come help us play. And if he can’t, he won’t.”

UK freshman Travis Perry has started the past two games at point guard, with Butler, Kriisa and Robinson all ruled out. He has averaged 6.0 points, 2.5 assists, 1.0 steals and 3.0 turnovers in 26.0 minutes over those two games, a loss at Texas and a win over Vanderbilt.

Fellow freshman Collin Chandler has also been getting more opportunities in recent games, and he had his best performance yet as a college player Wednesday night, with seven points and six rebounds in the win over Vanderbilt.

There’s been a little good news on the injury front for Kentucky, with starting power forward Andrew Carr looking his best in nearly two months in the victory over Vanderbilt on Wednesday night.

Pope said after that game that Carr had been able to practice on consecutive days Monday and Tuesday for the first time in several weeks. He’s been dealing with a back injury that has had him in and out of the lineup since SEC play began. His 11 points in the win over Vandy were the most since he scored 14 in a victory over Texas A&M on Jan. 14.

With UK’s rash of injuries in recent weeks, Ansley Almonor, Koby Brea, Otega Oweh and Amari Williams are now the only Wildcats that have played in every game this season.

“Certainly, we’re missing pieces,” Pope said Friday. “We would love to get them back. We hope we get them back at some point. But in the meantime, we’re going to go compete with what we have, and we’re going to do it well. And these young guys are getting an unbelievable opportunity to go learn and grow in games, on the court, and become the great players that they’re destined to become. And it’s been fun to watch them.

Kentucky-Alabama injury report

Coach Nate Oats’ Crimson Tide have also had some injury troubles this season.

Fifth-year guard Latrell Wrightsell Jr. expected to play a prominent role after helping Bama get to the Final Four last year — suffered a season-ending injury in late November.

Freshman forward Derrion Reid was listed as out on Friday’s report. Reid has been battling a hamstring injury that has caused him to miss much of the SEC schedule, including Alabama’s 110-98 loss to Missouri on Wednesday night, as well as the first matchup with Kentucky five weeks ago. Reid is averaging 7.1 points and 3.2 rebounds per game this season.

Also listed as out on Friday’s injury report was senior guard Houston Mallette, a transfer from Pepperdine who has played sparingly this season.

A big name that popped up on Alabama’s side of the injury report was SEC player of the year Mark Sears, who was listed as probably Friday night, meaning he has a roughly 75% chance to play in the game. Sears has played in every game so far this season and is leading the Tide with 18.5 points and 4.8 assists per game. He scored a season-high 35 points in the loss to Missouri earlier this week.

One big name that was absent from the injury report was fifth-year center Clifford Omoruyi, one of the highest-profile transfers in the portal last year after playing four seasons at Rutgers. Omoruyi has averaged 7.0 points and 6.4 rebounds while shooting 71.7% from the field this season, starting all 26 games this season.

The 6-11, 250-pound post player was listed as questionable on the report before Alabama’s loss to Missouri on Wednesday night. He ultimately played in the game, though it was one of the worst outings of his season. He had four points and tied a season low with two rebounds in just 15 minutes.
