The community laments the loss of a young life in a buggy accident and urges vigilance on nearby roadways.

LAWRENCE TOWNSHIP, Mich. — A community is grieving after a child was killed and another was critically hurt after an SUV hit the Amish buggy they were in Wednesday morning in Lawrence Township.

It happened on County Road 215 and 60th Avenue, according to Michigan State Police (MSP). Police said a 31-year-old woman from Mattawan was arrested for “suspected substance use.”

Sallena Pritchard works near where the crash happened and told News Channel 3 that she’s seen the children before while they were in the buggy.

“I pass these little kids in their little buggy on their way to school and stuff,” Pritchard said. “It’s really sad.” An eight-year-old girl was killed and a 12-year-old boy was taken to the hospital in critical condition, according to MSP, who added that the horse pulling the children had to be put down. “I see the kids every morning when I go to work,” Lawrence resident, Barry Carpp, said. “I wave to them all winter long, and they’re a new family. No parent should ever have to go through that.” The driver had children in the car as well, however, they were unharmed, troopers said. People who live nearby told News Channel 3 they hope something like this never happens again. “I am really sorry that it happened,” Pritchard said. “People need to be cautious. People need to, you know, give them the right away.” Investigators have not released the name of the suspect or the victims in this case.
