Maria Sharapova on how tennis has helped her as a parent
While Maria Sharapova left tennis behind four years ago, the 37-year-old states that the lessons the sport taught her have helped her navigate motherhood better.
In an interview with People Magazine, Sharapova explained that the skills of scheduling and discipline required to be a successful player often helped her as a parent.
“I think in some ways there were so many elements of my sport that I could apply into motherhood. Just the discipline of the schedules and routines and seeing the benefit of that through their behavior and through their eyes has also been really helpful. When I was playing, knowing where I was going to be and when I was going to nap and when I was going to eat helped me so much with my energy,” the Russian said.
She went on to add that despite her best efforts, raising a child often meant that settling into a fixed routine was impossible.
“He’s constantly evolving into new phases, so I feel like just when you’ve settled into a certain routine, it can go out the window. So you’re constantly adjusting to new circumstances, new developmental stages. You just have to acknowledge it changes all the time.”
While Sharapova has retired from tennis, she hasn’t distanced herself from the sport. Recently, she even took her son to Wimbledon, showing him the courts where she won her first Grand Slam.
