The Philadelphia Phillies have bigger worries than extending Kyle Schwarber right now, but when the time comes, president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski will be tasked with an important decision.
Schwarber has been one of the better power hitters in the major leagues over the past few years and has been a force in the middle of the Phillies’ lineup.
However, with how expensive the rest of the roster is, one has to question whether the Phillies will get a deal done.
Schwarber, who doesn’t seem to be working on a deal with the Phillies, according to recent reports, could walk for nothing in a few months.
There are a few questions to consider, mainly regarding his potential deal. Many have wondered if the deal might not be as much as it could be, given his age and defensive issues.
“Surely, if the Phillies were to extend Schwarber, they would have to do better than the two-year, $37 million contract that DH Joc Pederson, a platoon player, got from the Texas Rangers,” Stitt wrote.
Schwarber is a better hitter than Pederson, but there are some similarities there.
They’re both veterans with massive power in a left-handed bat, but as Stitt noted, Schwarber should benefit from being a better hitter.
Early in the 2025 campaign, he’s continued to swing the bat at a high level, hitting six home runs while continuing to walk at a high rate, currently with 14.
