Star point guard Ja Morant and the Memphis Grizzlies suffered their fourth consecutive loss on Tuesday night, falling to the Golden State Warriors despite Morant’s 36-point effort. Due to results around the league, the Grizzlies have since fallen to eighth in the Western Conference standings, putting an automatic playoff qualification at risk.
As the Grizzlies search for answers to their recent struggles, there was concern of additional trouble on the horizon. The NBA was investigating an incident from the game in which Morant and Warriors guard Buddy Hield were seen exchanging gun gestures during a timeout.
The NBA has since decided not to discipline anyone involved. “NBA issued warnings – no further penalties – to Grizzlies’ Ja Morant and Warriors’ Buddy Hield along with both teams for gestures on Tuesday night, sources tell ESPN,” Charania updated on Thursday. “League ruled the celebrations were not intended to be violent in nature, but inappropriate and should refrain.” Before this ruling, Morant made a three-word post on X. “God bless yall,” he wrote. Despite the Grizzlies’ struggles, Morant has remained their standout performer, averaging 29.7 points, 7.4 assists, and 4.5 rebounds over his last ten games (via StatMuse). However, Memphis will be hoping the NBA’s investigation does not lead to another lengthy suspension for Morant, who missed 25 games last season due to a gun-related controversy. The Grizzlies return to action on Thursday night for a crucial home matchup against the Miami Heat as they look to climb back into the top-six.
