The University of Michigan has recently unveiled a statue honoring one of its most iconic football legends: Desmond Howard. The bronze sculpture, which depicts Howard striking his famous Heisman pose, was revealed during a ceremony at Michigan Stadium. This tribute celebrates his remarkable college football career, during which he set or tied five NCAA records and twelve school records, including 19 receiving touchdowns in a single season—the program’s
current all-time record. Howard’s electrifying performances, such as his diving touchdown catch against Notre Dame and his Heisman pose after scoring on a punt return against Ohio State, solidified his place in Michigan’s storied history. In 2010, he was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame and honored as the inaugural Michigan Football Legend, a program recognizing former players equivalent to a retired jersey number.
This statue serves as a lasting tribute to Howard’s legacy and contributions to Michigan football, inspiring future generations of athletes and fans alike.
