HARTFORD, Maine A man accused of domestic assault was shot and killed by sheriff’s deputies after the Oxford County Sheriff’s Office said an incident escalated Saturday in Hartford. Shortly before 4:45 p.m., the Oxford County Communications Center received a call from an 80-year-old man reporting a domestic assault by his step-son, 51-year-old Eric Newell at a residence on Tucker Road, according to a news release from the sheriff’s office. The Oxford County Sheriff’s Office and Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office responded. After unsuccessful attempts to de-escalate the situation, Newell left the residence and approached deputies with a knife, the sheriff’s office said. “Oxford Deputy Reece Rodrique and Deputy Derek MacDonald issued commands but Mr. Newell failed to comply,” according to the sheriff’s office. Both deputies fatally shot Newell, the release stated. Deputies Rodrique and MacDonald have been placed on administrative leave while the attorney general’s office investigates the incident, which is standard protocol in these situations.
