Canada took down defending champions Sweden 8-6 to maintain their perfect round-robin record on the second day of the 2025 World Mixed Doubles Curling Championship on Sunday (27 April). It was a tenacious display from Jocelyn Peterman and Brett Gallant, who initially gave up three points due to an Anna Hasselborg double take-out in the first end, putting them immediately in chase mode. After responding with two points of their own in the second and fourth ends, while holding Sweden to just one in the third, the Canadians managed to claw back the deficit, leaving just one point separating the teams at the end of the fifth. Choosing to use their power play at the start of the sixth, the husband-and-wife pairing masterminded a score of three to move into the lead, 7-5. And after forcing Sweden to score just one in their power play, they took the upper hand with a 7-6 advantage going into the last end with the hammer. At the finish, Peterman didn’t need to throw her last stone after a Hasselborg miss saw the Swedes reach for handshakes. Joining the hosts at the top of Group A are Scotland and Italy, who both secured strong wins against Denmark and the Republic of Korea, respectively, to keep their momentum going. The Italians opened with a four-point first end to dominate the game against the so-far winless Koreans, while Scotland won by being adept on defence, holding the Danes to scores of one each time they had the hammer. In Group B, Australia’s Dean Hewitt and Tahli Gill backed up their hot start against Switzerland with a win over 2023 world champions Korey Dropkin and Cory Thiesse of the United States. They now sit at 3-0 after seeing off Türkiye 10-2 in the day’s evening session. Joining them in remaining still undefeated is world number one side, Estonia. Marie Kaldvee and Henri Lill didn’t have it all their own way in their second game of the day against Spain, but managed to clinch the win with a one-point steal in the eighth end. Switzerland rebounded from a second straight loss to register their first win over Norway. Alina Pätz and Sven Michel’s path to victory started after stealing two points during the Norwegians’ power play in the sixth end. They scored one in the seventh and two in the eighth to seal the deal. Joining them in victory was Japan, who defeated Czechia 7-6 in an extra end, and the United States, who saw off New Zealand 10-2. Both teams now sit at 2-1 overall. The World Mixed Doubles Curling Championship in Fredericton is also doubling as a qualifier for the Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026, with Olympic Qualification Points awarded to teams based on finishing result. These points will be used to determine quota spots.
