Clippers exit effect – NBA legend Oscar Robertson slams franchises over Russell Westbrook’s unfair treatment
Now on his 5th team in the last five years, Russell Westbrook has found an anchor in Oscar Robertson.
No matter how much we praise him, one cannot deny the unfortunate turn of events for Russell Westbrook since he left the OKC Thunder. Despite adding valuable contributions each time he stepped on the court, Brodie has only been part of packaged trade deals.
The most recent case is the Clippers, for whom the former MVP made all the sacrifices, be it coming off the bench or consistently decreasing the number of minutes played. Many felt Westbrook’s departure had much to do with Paul George not re-signing with the Ballmer franchise.
What makes this even more surprising is that the two-time scoring champion drew a salary little above the veteran minimum. Though he has found himself in a favorable situation with the Nuggets, Hall of Fame point guard Oscar Robertson seemed disgusted over the treatment of a top 75 player of all time.
The Big O bats for Russell Westbrook
It has been in the making for a while now, but someone has finally called out the league and its parties for the disrespect shown to Westbrook. When have we seen a player with the accolades of an MVP, scoring title, multiple All-Star selections, nine All-NBA selections, and the list goes on, traded so rampantly?
Robertson didn’t mince his words, even suggesting a rather selfish approach used by several teams in the league. The former champion also spoke about Brodie being made a scapegoat on several occasions.
It’s no secret that Russ and Oscar have a great relationship. Triple-doubles are a major commonality between them. The Big O was even present to commemorate Brodie’s 42 triple-doubles during the 2016-17 season, the highest in a single season.
While one does understand the business side of the NBA, the spirit of the game needs to be maintained.
Has the NBA failed Russell Westbrook?
This statement may be too harsh, but the approach toward Westbrook raises many questions. This might be a decision among the 30 organizations; maybe the time has come for decorated veteran players like Russ to have certain rights and not be in a vulnerable position.
Playing for the 2023 championship team, the Denver Nuggets, is Brodie’s best and probably last chance to win a title, something that could compensate for the disrespect he suffered in the previous few years.
