BREAKING: Norman Police investigate toddler deaths
An investigation is ongoing in the deaths of two toddlers found dead after being left in a car in central Norman, police told The Transcript on Friday.
The Norman Police Department said they made a welfare check late Thursday on a vehicle stopped in the 1000 block of W. Brooks Street.
Upon arriving, officers found both two-year-old children dead inside the vehicle.
“The temperatures inside vehicles can increase drastically, within minutes,” said Norman police spokesperson Sarah Schettler. “In this instance, it appears this is a tragic accident, (according to) all indications early on in this investigation.”
The initial investigation indicates that the two children were accidentally left in the vehicle for an extended period of time and were later located by family, police said.
Shettler said there are no pending arrests or charges at this time. However, she said, the investigation is ongoing and a final determination will be made pending a report from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner of the State of Oklahoma.
“The medical examiner will determine the final cause of death. Our investigation will proceed when we have that information,” Shettler said. “When things like this happen we continue to encourage individuals to take extra precautions. Make sure you are checking the vehicle for any individuals not leaving before locking your vehicle and walking away from it.”
