Belgium’s Wait for Cyclocross Gold Continues: “Mathieu Was in Control…

The wait for a Belgian victory in the elite men’s race at the Cyclocross World Championships continues, with Belgium securing two medals but falling short of gold once again. Mathieu van der Poel of the Netherlands dominated the race, claiming a record-equalling seventh world title, while Belgium’s Wout van Aert finished second, and Thibau Nys took third. For Belgium, the last time they tasted gold in this event was in 2018 when Van Aert triumphed, and since then, they’ve had to watch as their hopes for victory slip away.

Belgian coach Angelo De Clercq shared his thoughts on the race in an interview with Wielerflits. According to De Clercq, van der Poel’s control over the race was evident from the first lap. The Dutchman quickly asserted his dominance, leaving little room for others to challenge him. “Mathieu was in control from the start,” De Clercq stated. “It was clear he was the strongest today, and the other riders couldn’t really match his pace.”

Van Aert’s race, on the other hand, was filled with challenges. Starting from the fourth row, the Belgian rider had to battle through the field right from the get-go. It wasn’t just a matter of fighting through the pack; Van Aert faced difficulties in the very first corner of the race, which only made things more complicated. “He was super far back; he was completely stuck in that corner,” De Clercq explained. “There were only four men behind him, so he had to do a lot of work just to get back into the race.”

While Van Aert did everything he could to fight his way back, the damage was done early, and he struggled to make up the lost ground. De Clercq reflected that this might have been the best result Van Aert could have achieved under the circumstances, though he still felt it was a shame that his rider couldn’t get into the race sooner. “I think that’s a shame,” De Clercq added. “This was probably the best he could do, but I just think it’s a shame that he didn’t get into the race.”

For Van Aert, finishing second was a respectable achievement considering the adversity he faced. His ability to recover and finish on the podium is a testament to his resilience, but there’s no doubt that he will be disappointed with the outcome, especially given his past successes and the expectations placed on him as one of the sport’s top riders.

Thibau Nys, the rising star from Belgium, secured third place, which offered some consolation for the Belgian team. The 20-year-old showed promise in his first appearance in an elite World Championship, finishing on the podium and proving that he has a bright future ahead of him in the world of cyclocross.

However, the absence of a Belgian victory once again raises questions about the future of the sport in the country, where cyclocross is a beloved tradition. Belgium has long been the dominant force in the discipline, but in recent years, the Dutch have asserted their supremacy, and Van der Poel’s latest triumph only highlights that shift.

Despite the disappointment, Belgium remains hopeful. The emergence of riders like Nys offers optimism for the future, and Van Aert’s persistence in the face of adversity shows that he is always a threat on the world stage. For now, though, the wait for that elusive cyclocross gold continues.
