Announcers Kentucky basketball fans adore and despise: Big Blue Nation speaks

Kentucky fans are as passionate about the voices calling the game as they are about the action on the court and boy, do they have opinions! While true Big Blue Nation supporters follow their team through thick and thin, they also have a clear idea of which announcers bring the perfect blend of insight and excitement, and which ones just don’t hit the mark. Not including Givens or Leach who are already beloved, but which announcers does big blue nation love and loathe?

Voices That Don’t Quite Hit the Sweet Spot (loathe)

Seth Greenberg The recent addition to the booth hasn’t won over many fans following some of his off-the-cuff comments. His style has left a few fans less than impressed.

Jim Spanarkel A perennial gripe among Kentucky fans, Spanarkel’s commentary on CBS has been a point of contention for years. Many feel he just doesn’t like the Cats.

Dick Vitale Vitale is a polarizing figure—fans either love his exuberant style or can’t stand it. His trademark catchphrases have their loyal supporters, but they definitely aren’t for everyone.

Dan Dakich Recently, Dakich stirred up controversy by calling Kentucky “irrelevant.” And coming from an Indiana guy, that comment has made him a target of ridicule among Wildcats faithful.

Jimmy Dykes- His recent 3 game stretch with the Cats had fans ready to mute the tv and listen to the radio. Though like Vitale, he has a lot of supporters too.

Voices That Make Fans Cheer (love)

Ian Eagle With a smooth, resonant voice and a knack for capturing the flow of the game, Eagle is a favorite among Kentucky fans. His calls add an extra layer of excitement to every play.

Jay Bilas The former “Dukie” has carved out a niche with his down-to-earth, honest commentary. Bilas’s ability to call the game exactly as he sees it resonates with fans who appreciate authenticity.

Jason Benetti Known primarily as one of the best baseball announcers in the game, Benetti’s versatility and engaging delivery have won him a loyal fan base across sports even when he’s behind the microphone for basketball.

Dan Shulman The smooth-talking voice of ESPN, Shulman brings a level of polish and clarity that makes every game feel like an event. His commentary is both informed and engaging, keeping fans on the edge of their seats.

Bill Rafferty Nothing gets Kentucky fans more hyped than hearing “ONIONS” when a big three-pointer goes in, and Rafferty’s enthusiastic calls always bring the house down. His energy is infectious and undeniably fun.

So, which voice do you find the most entertaining or the most grating? Whether you’re a die-hard fan or a casual viewer, the debate over the best (and worst) game callers is as lively as the action on the court. Let us know: Which announcer is your all-time favorite, and who just doesn’t do it for you?
