Firefighters in Panama City Beach advocate for unionization.

PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla.
Panama City Beach firefighters have sent Panama City Beach City Officials a notification that they are attempting to unionize the fire department employees.

They’ve launched a Facebook page, and if successful, it would be Panama City Beach Professional Firefighters Association Local 5147.

But the page does not offer any reasons why workers would want to organize as a union.

Panama City Beach City Officials will post a letter in all the beach fire stations, acknowledging a petition has been filed, seeking an election for employees to decide if they want to be represented by a union.

It spells out workers’ rights under Florida law. It also points out that Florida is a right-to-work state, and union membership is not a requirement for employment.

No word yet as to when firefighters will vote on unionization. News 13 will update the developing story as more information becomes available.
