Brundle is perplexed as to why Red Bull is “in such a mess with drivers”

Former F1 driver and now Sky Sports pundit Martin Brundle does not understand why Red Bull “are in such a mess with drivers” despite boasting one of the best driver academies in motorsport. It comes after Liam Lawson lost his seat at Red Bull Racing after just two Grands Prix in the 2025 season. On Thursday, news officially broke that Yuki Tsunoda will drive the Japanese Grand Prix in the RB21 as Max Verstappen’s teammate, replacing the Newlander for the rest of the campaign. Lawson will join Racing Bulls alongside Isack Hadjar, dropping back down to the team he was at alongside Tsunoda to end the 2024 season. It’s yet another ruthless and criticised move by Red Bull when it comes to the decisions made about their second drivers, with Pierre Gasly and Alex Albon both former academy drivers that were shunned by the Austrian team, along with Daniel Ricciardo and Carlos Sainz too, losing many top drivers that were once a part of their junior team. Brundle confused at Red Bull’s junior team choices Speaking for the first time since the news of the driver swap became official on X account, Brundle said: “Red Bull uniquely has a junior team on the grid, so it’s doubly confusing they are in such a mess with drivers. And their only driver they desperately need appears to be casting around for the future. “Liam Lawson’s reputation is temporarily trashed, and he has nothing to lose now. He should turn that into an advantage and let his natural talent flow,” continued the Brit, believing that Lawson’s move back down to the sister team of Red Bull could bring out the best in him once again.
