Interview with Jared Mees, the 2024 AFT SuperTwins Grand National Champion…
Nine-time Grand National Champion Jared Mees enters the 2024 season with history already written and more records in his sights. After equaling Scott Parker’s legendary record of nine Grand National Championships in 2023, Mees reflects on his career, the journey to this milestone, and what lies ahead.
“It wasn’t a dream; it was a goal,” Mees emphasizes. “I worked hard to get that. Not only did I dream about it, but I made it a point that was what I was going to do.” His determination has defined his career, marked by grit, adaptability, and relentless pursuit of excellence.
Reflecting on #9
Mees didn’t just match Parker’s record; he earned it against a field of rising stars and fierce competitors. 2023 saw Mees face stiff competition from Dallas Daniels, a young phenom who dominated early in the season, and Briar Bauman, who adapted to a new KTM platform with Rick Ware Racing. Despite Daniels’ incredible consistency, Mees clinched the title with nine wins and 15 podiums, including a streak of 14 consecutive top-three finishes.
“Grand National Championship 9 had to be earned,” Mees says. “When I blew my knee out in 2021 and still got seven, I knew I could make a run at this deal.”
The Team Behind the Success
A key element of Mees’ dominance is his long-standing team, led by Craig Rogers, crew chief Kenny Tolbert, and Öhlins suspension technician Jimmy Wood. “These guys know my demeanor. The language is all there,” Mees shares. “I have the best team, that’s for sure.”
Their chemistry has been a cornerstone of his success, allowing Mees to adapt across generations of riders and machines, from the Harley-Davidson XR750 era to the modern multi-manufacturer competition.
What’s Next?
With nine championships to his name, the obvious next step is chasing an unprecedented 10th title. However, Mees is also closing in on another legendary mark: Parker’s 94 career wins. Mees currently stands at 72, with his recent seasons suggesting it’s within reach if he continues at this pace.
But at 38, Mees acknowledges the balance he must strike between racing and his growing responsibilities as a husband, father, and businessman. “I love this sport. I love racing. I love winning. But at the end of the day, it’s got to make financial sense for me too,” Mees says.
2024 and Beyond
Mees is set to return in 2024, ready to defend his title and pursue #10. Yet, he knows the competition will only intensify, with Daniels and Bauman poised for even stronger seasons. Still, his confidence in his team and his ability to adapt remains unshaken.
“I think they’ll be the toughest guys again. But I feel pretty confident going in. My team is going to stay basically the same, and we’ll be ready.”
As Mees continues to chase history, the sport’s fans are witnessing one of flat track racing’s all-time greats cement his legacy. Whether he ultimately becomes the sport’s undisputed GOAT, Jared Mees’ story is already one for the ages.
