Man banned from Yellowstone National Park, officials say

A Colorado man was sentenced to seven days in jail on Oct. 31 and banned from Yellowstone National Park after walking off a designated trail.

The United States Attorney’s Office of Wyoming said on Friday 62-year-old Joseph Aita of Colorado Springs entered Canary Spring, a protected area of Mammoth Hot Springs on the northern side of the park. Aita entered the protected area alongside co-defendant Celia Aita and two children.

Officials said Aita pleaded guilty to destroying a mineral resource and was sentenced to five years of probation, with a ban from Yellowstone National Park for those five years and a fine of $3,000.

Officials said he would also be required to pay $60 in mandatory court costs and fees
